CD117, also known as c-Kit or SCFR, is a 145 kD transmembrane tyrosine-kinase receptor and member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It functions as a critical receptor for stem cell factor (SCF), activating signaling pathways (e.g., STAT) essential for hematopoiesis, melanogenesis, and gametogenesis.
The protein is primarily expressed on hematopoietic stem cells, mast cells, myeloid progenitors, and certain tumor cells like AML. In analytical applications such as flow cytometry, CD117 antibodies serve as vital markers for identifying multipotent progenitors and studying cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation across various embryonic and mature cell lineages.
