CD11a, also known as integrin alpha L (ITGAL), is a 180 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the surface of all mouse leukocytes. Together with CD18 (integrin β2), CD11a forms the heterodimeric lymphocyte function–associated antigen-1 (LFA-1). LFA-1 plays a central role in leukocyte adhesion and migration through interactions with its ligands ICAM-1, ICAM-2, and ICAM-3. Upon cellular activation, CD11a undergoes a conformational change from a low-affinity to a high-affinity state, enabling firm cell–cell interactions. CD11a is also involved in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling and regulates immune cell activation, trafficking, and effector functions.
